      Content: ‘Let the little children come to me’ –Mark 10:14 ‘Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.’ –Matthew 18:5   These familiar verses are often referenced when pastors and scholars talk about their theology of children’s ministry. In fact, there are several excellent books that reference them in their title.[1] It appears these are the texts standard upon which our theology of children’s ministry is built. A closer look at the words and context suggests a deeper meaning that challenges traditional models of children’s ministry. Reread the context of these ‘one-liners’ and you’ll find the true focus of Jesus’ words is not really about children. (I know, you’re shocked!) Instead, Jesus uses the children to teach the adults! His words are a metaphor to explain how all people, adults included, find new life and the dependency of a child in their relationship with God. ‘Let the children come’ is in reference to all of us as children of God. We all come to Christ as an infant, full of new life and ultimately dependent on God for all our needs. When read in context with verses 1-3, ‘Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me’ encourages us to welcome all new Christians, not just children.[2] When we read these familiar verses from an adult point of view, we think they are about teaching our faith to younger generations. An intergenerational perspective, which I believe more accurate, interprets these texts as a reminder that children teach adults just as much as we teach them. Since these familiar passages are so often misunderstood, let’s take a look at two other passages that can teach us about intergenerational ministry. Together, Deuteronomy 6 and Luke 2:41-52 highlight intergenerational faith formation as participatory experience in the divine narrative. Deuteronomy 6:4-5 is quoted by Jesus himself as the greatest commandment: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.” It is a passage every Jewish child and adult would know by heart because the following verses prescribe the wearing, writing and teaching of the command. In fact, the rest of the chapter speaks of passing on stories of the faith to the next generation. Within this passage there is the command to love and the command to teach that love as the story is shared and passed down from generation to generation. The young boy at the temple in Luke 2 is one of thousands of children who have been taught the law of love from Deuteronomy 6. He has been taught the faith through the divine narrative and scriptural law. In fact, at the age of twelve he is likely to be well acquainted with the law. Modern Judaism celebrates boy bar mitzfahs at thirteen and girl bat mitzfahs at twelve. [3] While these celebrations are a modern tradition, the educational standards of this age group would have been similar and perhaps even more stringent in Jesus’ time. He was expected to know the scriptures, so we should not be surprised he was discussing them with his elders. This was the regular practice of the community. It is possible this interaction at the temple was less about his divine nature and more about his inquisitive, Jewish, childlike and human nature. Taken together, Deuteronomy 6 and Luke 2 offer a theological foundation of teaching, questioning and listening as tools for exploring the divine story and our faith in Christ. Love is taught, questions are asked and ears are opened for intergenerational conversation. They are also passages that allow all ages to enter into the story. Whether young or old, your story is represented in these divine words. One can enter into the story and find a place within the narrative as teacher, listener, questioner, learner or all of the above. Generations learn from one another as they explore their faith together. What would happen if the church reclaimed community practices that expected intergenerational rituals and learning?
